JIS SPA-H Corten steel is particularly relevant to maritime transportation equipment such as shipping containers and certain port-side or cargo-handling structures exposed primarily to the atmosphere.

However, atmospheric corrosion resistance does not mean unlimited resistance to seawater.

If steel remains continuously wet, submerged in seawater or exposed to severe chloride accumulation without suitable wet-dry cycles, the protective weathering effect may be reduced. For these conditions, material selection, coating systems and corrosion allowances must be evaluated separately.

Therefore, SPA-H is better described as a weather-resistant steel for maritime transportation environments, rather than a substitute for stainless steel or specialized marine corrosion-resistant materials.
